The author suggests that switching to a ketogenic diet will provide an alternative to diet pills. The pills tend to contain caffeine and other substances which do not promote healing of the conditions which are the underlying cause of obesity. Ketogenic principles are effective in changing the way the body operates so that it burns fat instead of glucose which comes from carbs.

The basic premises of the ketogenic diet include obtaining up to 75 percent of daily calories from high fat sources. Only 5-10 percent should come from carbohydrates. The amount of protein is carefully calculated.

The principles of a ketogenic diet have been found to alleviate the symptoms of a number of different diseases. In some cases, switching to the principles of ketogenic eating can be said to have cured the disease. Some of the diseases which are affected by changing dietary habits include epileptic seizures, cancer, ALS, Alzheimer's, diabetes, aging, Parkinson's, brain trauma, mitochondrial disorder, autism, migraines and depression.

The author is Vanessa Olsen, a resident of Waterloo, Ontario, and a graduate of Ryerson's School of Nursing in 2010. Her current career is as a sports nutritionist. From earliest childhood, Vanessa was known as an active sports leader, as well as for growing vegetables in her back yard. With a background such as this, it is not surprising that she is today viewed as a health nut. Both in her chosen career and in her personal life, she demonstrates the way of life which she writes about.

Creative recipe development is one part of her spare time activities. She also likes to travel and has visited areas such as Cuba, Germany, Spain, Britain and Brazil. More recently, she has devoted herself to nearby locations in Ontario. Future plans include a long road trip to see more of the United States. Olsen is also an avid recycler, in the active mode, rather than just paying lip service to the concept.
